The Teen Summit is an educational, enlightening, informative and entertaining forum for teens in the Tampa Bay area. The Tampa Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has put on this event for the past 5 years.  Combined with the Florida Invitational High School Step Show Competition, recent Teen Summits have included participating teams from not only the Bay area, but teams from Plantation, Del Ray, Savannah, Georgia and Memphis Tennessee.  The concept of the Teen Summit originated with Alpha member Terry Hatfield and initially included a presentation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Project Alpha Program.  This program, in which the Fraternity has partnered with the March of Dimes, addresses the problems of teen pregnancies by providing factual information to teens so that they can make responsible decisions, thus preventing the problems that result from irresponsible behavior including teen pregnancies, premature babies, STDs and HIV/AIDS.  In addition to the Project Alpha program, early Teen Summits included workshops on study skills, financial aid, and other education-focused topics, as well as a 3-on-3 basketball competition.

The 2005 Teen Summit was taken to another level by Alpha members Craig King and Anthony Reeves.  The 2005 Teen Summit was expanded to include an Essay Contest, Scholars Bowl Competition, Scholarship Competition, as well as educational workshops, “Food for Your Soul Picnic Luncheon,” 3-on-3 basketball tournament, the Step Competition and an overall Teen Summit Challenge Competition.  Under the direction of Brothers King and Reeves, the Teen Summit enjoyed increased visibility and exposure, including new partnerships with the law firm of Barkin and Neff, University Community Hospital, the Tampa Tribune, and the Florida Lottery.  The Kash n Karry Supermarket Chain served as title sponsor for the 2005 Teen Summit and was extremely helpful with both financial and in-kind assistance.

Tampa Bay Technical High School captured the Overall Teen Summit Challenge Competition for 2005.  Can TBT capture the award again in 2009?

The 2009 Teen Summit promises to be even bigger and better. The Teen Summit will be held at the University Area Community Center at 14010 North 22nd Street in Tampa.  The Summit will consist of the following:

  • Educational Workshops will include:
  • “It’s Okay to Achieve – Resisting Negative Peer Pressure”
  • “Planning Your Future Now – Classes to Take In High School to Prepare You for College”
  • “Where to Go When You Need Help – Resources That Are Available to Assist You”
